THE ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION (WHEN SALT BLOSSOMS)
Jennifer S. Brown
When salt blossoms
Crystal flowers in the desert
I will break off each petal.
When it’s snowing red snowflakes
Like a bleeding god
I will stick out my tongue.
When the crow turns white and the egret turns black
Feathers scratching
I will know which to scare.
When the crawfish whistles on the mountain
As the water rises
I will drown its whimpers.
When hell freezes
Into a slick underworld
I will skate over faces of the damned.
When gypsy children fall from the sky
Their pockets jingling
I will hold out my palm.
When pigs fly
High above gored slaughterhouses
I will drink in air they can’t defile.
When the moon turns blue
Over the jagged treeline
I will listen to your cheap prayers.
When Taleb’s black swan spreads its wings, I will forgive you.
